Colors are classified psychologically based on the feelings of warmth and coolness they evoke in humans. When the colors are arranged on the color wheel so that yellow and purple are opposite each other, the colors on the green and blue side of the line connecting yellow and purple are called "cool colors," while those on the red and orange side are called "warm colors." The psychological effects of colors are thought to stem entirely from certain physical facts found in nature. For example, the warmth of orange and red is due to the color of fire, while the coldness of blue comes from the color of ice and water. Things with physical warmth, like the sun and fire, are in the warm spectrum, while things that are cool and refreshing, like water, ice, and forests, are in the cool spectrum.
Blue generally represents calmness, simplicity, and peace. On the negative side, it can also symbolize loneliness, sadness, and depression. Wearing blue clothes to business meetings is considered a good psychological choice.
Red symbolizes warmth, blood, love, and fire. It can cause people to make quick decisions and increase their expectations. Due to its stimulating, exciting, and threatening qualities, red is not recommended for students before exams, as it can negatively affect exam performance. Red is a very attention-grabbing color that increases emotional intensity.
Black is a symbol of power, elegance, and authority. It is frequently used in the fashion industry. On the other hand, it is also seen as a color of mystery and evil. Generally, black has negative, pessimistic associations and is linked with death and mourning in many cultures.
White symbolizes purity, courtesy, innocence, and cleanliness. It is also associated with the concept of equality. White can represent a successful beginning as it signifies stability. Due to its meanings, brides in many cultures prefer to wear white. Doctors and nurses also wear white because it symbolizes cleanliness.
Green represents nature, tranquility, health, luck, and freshness. It symbolizes life, youth, and hope. It is a calming color, which is why it is preferred in hospitals. Additionally, researchers suggest that green can enhance reading ability and speed.
Yellow influences loyalty, happiness, and joy. It is the color of intellectual personalities. Since it is also the color of the sun, it evokes positive feelings in people. Like the sun, it gives people a sense of warmth. Yellow is a bright, energetic color that grabs attention. Due to its eye-catching quality, taxis are painted yellow. Also, because it stimulates appetite, yellow is frequently used in restaurants.
Purple, the color of nobility, also represents power, luxury, and ambition. It symbolizes luxurious living, wealth, and elegance, but also wastefulness. Sometimes, it can create feelings of insecurity in people, as it can reveal neurotic emotions and subconsciously frighten them.
Orange, although not as much as red, is an energetic and exciting color. It symbolizes enthusiasm, admiration, creativity, attraction, and success. It stimulates and encourages people. For this reason, orange is an effective color for grabbing attention and is frequently used in advertising and traffic signs. Orange has a friendlier attitude compared to other colors. It represents friendship and trust, and places where orange is used tend to be cheerful and lively.
Pink is a softer and more delicate color that also conveys courtesy. The psychological effects of colors vary, and their impact on individuals may differ. In general, pink has a calming effect. According to research, pink can be used to calm people down and soften their hearts. In one study, the doors and windows of a prison were painted pink, and it was observed that prisoners' aggressive behaviors disappeared. This demonstrated that pink is a color that absorbs energy and has a calming effect.
